As has been the case since the start of the season, the driver who took pole position - in this instance, Maximilian Gunther (Maserati) - did not win the race. Instead, the German finished third, ahead of the Penske DS entries of Stoffel Vandoorne and Vergne.

Both drivers have yet to score points this season but sensationally reached the final part of qualifying for the team’s home event in wet but gradually improving conditions.

Buemi gained nearly two tenths on Jaguar’s Bird in the opening sector at the Tempelhof Airport Street Circuit and extended that advantage in the second part of the lap.

The German topped the morning session from the midway point before improving on his personal best at the very end, eventually posting a 1m05.301s which left him more than two tenths clear of Nick Cassidy. 

The first five places in the teams' ranking are in fact occupied by only three manufacturers. Porsche, the strong leader, and customer team Andretti in fifth, while Jaguar is in third outpaced by its customer squad Envision Racing.
