A teenager is in a critical condition in Cork University Hospital after a loose horse entered the M8 motorway and the vehicle he was driving collided with it

The busy motorway was closed twice in quick succession after police dealt with an 'incident' in the early afternoon, with traffic completely ground to a halt, as motorists were pictured getting out of their vehicles to see what was going on

Traffic Scotland and West Lothian Police informed motorists of the closure between Junction 3A and 4 near Whitburn, shortly after 11am on Saturday, with both lanes now reopening

A stretch of the motorway has been closed in both directions between Junction 3a and Junction 4a south of Edinburgh.

The 22-year-old was hit by a red Toyota on the motorway this morning. Emergency services closed the road following the incident, with the man taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The 22-year-old was knocked down on the eastbound carriageway, near Junction, 24 Helen Street, at around 8.20am on Thursday, before being rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

Drivers were forced to swerve out the way of a boat that was abandoned on the side of the M8 after it came off of a trailer on Monday. Police urge drivers to ensure any trailers are secure before they set off on their journey.

Traffic Scotland alerted motorists to the crash around 11:45am on Friday, July 8, issuing an update saying that the M8 westbound at junction 3A is blocked and consequently closed around 20 minutes later
