It’s been three decades since the groundbreaking – and some might still say controversial – move to run NASCAR’s premier series on the open-wheel hallowed ground of Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Sunday’s Brickyard 400 is the first for the series on the 2.5-mile oval track since the 2020 season – and the first ever for the Next Gen car. The series has run on the Indy Road Course for the last three years.

After spending the past three years on the IMS road course, NASCAR has returned to the 2.5-mile oval course layout this year, the 30th anniversary of the first Brickyard 400.

Jeffrey, who served as the spotter for Pato O’Ward on the Chevrolet-powered No. 5 entry the past two seasons, passed away on Thursday after a battle with cancer. He most recently spotted the IndyCar race at Laguna Seca last month, along with the recent test at Nashville Superspeedway. 

Kyle Larson, the 2021 NASCAR champion, gears up for the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis with renewed focus and appreciation for the iconic oval track.

For the first time since 2020, NASCAR will compete on the historic 2.5-mile oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway after having spent the past three seasons running on the road course configuration.

SHR driver Kevin Harvick – now retired from full-time NASCAR Cup competition – won the last two 400-mile races on the IMS oval before the Cup series began using the IMS Road Course in 2021.

Reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney captured the checkered flag at Pocono last weekend, holding off Denny Hamlin and Alex Bowman in the closing laps.

The race will take place this weekend in Indianapolis.

Blaney, the reigning Cup Series champion, picked up his second victory of the 2024 season on Sunday at Pocono Raceway, giving him consecutive multiple win seasons for the first time in his career.
