Toyota had seemed set to return to the top of the Le Mans timesheets for the first time since opening practice on Wednesday, with Kamui Kobayashi heading the majority of the session.

Antonio Fuoco claimed the top spot in the three-hour morning session of the Test Day with a 3m30.686s aboard his 499P Le Mans Hypercar, which put him six tenths up on Gustavo Menezes in the best of the Peugeot 9X8 LMHs.

After being blighted by sensor issues in Portugal, the #7 Toyota crew got their championship challenge back on track with a second victory of the season at Spa.

The Briton, who sealed third place on the final lap of the Spa 6 Hours with Antonio Giovinazzi and Alessandro Pier Guidi, told Autosport that “maybe we could have given them a fight” but for the three extra pitstops the #51 Ferrari 499P made in comparison with the winning Toyota.

The polesitting trio’s #7 GR010 HYBRID Le Mans Hypercar beat the sister crew of Sebastien Buemi, Ryo Hirakawa and Brendon Hartley - that had started from the back of the grid after the latter’s qualifying crash - by 11.637s.

Times set early in the one-hour session were around 20 seconds off the dry pace set on Thursday, but improved steadily before a final flurry of quick times saw several different manufacturers take turns atop the leaderboard.

Buemi jumped to the head of the timesheets after a 12-minute red flag midway through session aboard the #8 Toyota GR010 HYBRID Le Mans Hypercar with a 2m02.982s that gave him a margin of more than a second and a half over Ferrari driver Antonio Fuoco. 

Racing and test manager Giuliano Salvi conceded that the Italian manufacturer and the factory AF Corse team could have “pushed a bit more” on the second race outing for the 499P Le Mans Hypercar despite claiming second place with the entry shared by Antonio Fuoco, Nicklas Nielsen and Miguel Molina.
