Shoppers urged to avoid trolleys in Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Dunnes and more in money saving tip

Shoppers have been urged to ditch their trolleys in favour of baskets in a bid to save money.

As inflation in Ireland reaches a staggering 5.5%, households are now feeling the pinch as they do their weekly grocery shop.

Since the start of 2022 the cost of trips to the supermarket including more budget friendly options like Aldi or Lidl have been on the rise.

According to the Mirror UK it's better to choose a basket versus a trolley as shoppers can’t carry as much and therefore are inclined to buy less.

Baskets also tend to be heavier as items add up so people will be more likely to buy less to ease the weight.

Here are several other tips to try out:

Switch to own brand products

Making a simple swap to a supermarket's own brand products could help save a few euros weekly.

Check every aisle

Some products may be cheaper in different areas of the shop.

As an example, previous research from MoneySavingExpert found cotton buds can be 20 per cent cheaper in the baby aisle.

Don’t forgot your loyalty card

Many supermarkets now have a loyalty card scheme that allows customers to gather discounts.

Dunnes Stores and Supervalu use cards while Lidl have brought in an app.

If you don’t already use these, sign up right now to start saving.

Eat before shopping

Don’t shop on an empty stomach as you are more likely to make impulsive purchases.

You don’t want to get caught out by the delicious smells of the bakery aisle.

Go in with a plan

Before you leave the house make sure to check all the presses and the fridge to see what you actually need.

Making a list is also helpful to prevent overspending.

This way you stick to what you actually need and not just make purchases off the cuff.

Choose frozen over fresh

Choosing over fresh will help you make saving in the long run as these products are less likely to go off.

On top of this it’s better for the environment as it helps to reduce food waste.
