Dublin business launches 'lactation cookies' claiming to enhance breastmilk supply

A Dublin-based wholefood business has launched 'lactation cookies' believed to enhance the production of breastmilk.

Rua Food claims their new Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies have the added benefit of actively promoting the production in breastmilk for those already breastfeeding. They launched the treats last week and Rua owner Alice Tevlin said on Instagram they are "completely overwhelmed" by the number of orders. She also promised that the cookies are for everyone, lactating or not.

Alice also wrote on Instagram about the new treats: "Our Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies are delicious, plant-based and free from added gluten. They also have the added benefit of being Lactation Cookies!

"This means that they are made using ingredients that actively promote the production of breastmilk for those already breastfeeding. For everyone else, they are simply a delicious snack containing added nutritious ingredients - and won’t make you lactate!"

The special ingredients that are believed to enhance breastmilk production abilities are things all of us have tried before or already have in our diet: oats, brewer's yeast and linseed. The other - non-lactation-inducing - ingredients in the cookies are brown sugar, gluten-free flour blend (rice, potato, tapioca, maize, buckwheat), sunflower oil, 55 per cent dark chocolate, water, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda, and sea salt.

The cookies are on the more expensive side, starting from €13 for five of them, and €21 for 10. The Lactation Cookies are available in a number of stores across Dublin including Flower and Bean on Cork Street, Lennox Street Grocer in Portobello, Cafe 105 in Clonskeagh, and The Hopsack in Rathmines. They can also be ordered online.
