The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on June 10 that the ‘very severe’ cyclonic storm Biparjoy is expected to intensify further in the next twenty-four hours and will move north-northeastwards.

The severe cyclonic storm, Biparjoy (pronounced as Biporjoy), over East-Central and adjoining South-East Arabian Sea is likely to hit the Karnataka coast with immediate effect accompanied by gale winds, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on June 7.

Finally, the southwest monsoon is at Kerala’s doorstep, delayed by over one week compared to the normal onset date of June 1.

Cyclone Biparjoy, the first storm brewing in the Arabian Sea in 2023, intensified by 40 knots (74 kmph) since June 6 morning, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC). Meteorologists are predicting a “mild” monsoon onset over Kerala and “weak” progress beyond southern peninsular under its influence.
