Kenya is preparing to lead an international police force to combat gang violence in Haiti – an historic first for the East African nation.

The U.N. Security Council is scheduling a vote for Monday on a resolution that would authorize a one-year deployment of an international force to help Haiti quell a surge in gang violence and restore security so the troubled Caribbean nation can hold long-delayed elections

Gang violence in Haiti is escalating and spreading from the capital Port-au-Prince through the center of the country to its two other major cities, Gonaives and Cap-Haitien, with a significant increase in killings, kidnappings and rapes in the past few months, the UN chief said in a report circulated Wednesday.

Washington and Nairobi have signed a defence agreement that will see Kenya receive resources and support for security deployments as it is poised to lead a multi-national peacekeeping mission to Haiti to combat gang violence.
