The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) said action will take place over 16 consecutive days in January and February, with teachers in two local authorities walking out each day.

The EIS union said it has been angered by the conduct of the Scottish Government and local authority body Cosla in presenting their latest offer.

Teachers walked out en-masse today across the country to strike for a better pay offer, resulting in empty classrooms throughout Scotland and bringing the education system to a standstill.

The action was taken by the EIS union after it rejected an 11th hour offer from COSLA and the Scottish Government.

The Scottish Secondary Teachers’ Association said the latest deal was ‘pathetic’ and not the serious proposal the union had been expecting.

School gates are closed across the area today as teachers stage their first strike for 40 years.

Postal workers, teachers and university staff across Britain went on strike on Thursday to demand better pay, with warnings that there will be more industrial action and widespread disruption in the run-up to Christmas.
