The MotoGP silly season is in full swing heading into Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix at Mugello, with all eyes on the battle to fill the vacant factory seat at Ducati alongside Francesco Bagnaia.

Ahead of the fourth event of the season at Jerez this weekend, Acosta is fourth in the standings, just two points behind third-placed Maverick Vinales and five points behind second-placed Enea Bastianini.

MotoGP is going through a transitionary phase, as it looks to re-establish its global mainstream standing following recent years of declining interest in the wake of the retirement of Valentino Rossi.

Earlier on Friday, Tech3 announced that it would swap eight-time podium finisher Espargaro in favour of Moto2 championship leader Acosta, while Augusto Fernandez would retain his seat.

Espargaro signed to return to KTM and Tech3 for the 2023 season following two difficult years at Honda, following his first stint with the Austrian marque from 2017 to 2020.

KTM has currently found no solution to its rider logjam for the 2024 MotoGP season, with five riders contracted for four bikes.
