Terrifying photo of shark lurking under boat looks exactly like iconic Jaws movie poster

A terrifying photo of a massive shark lurking underneath a boat looks strikingly similar to the iconic poster for the 1975 film Jaws.

The whale shark was snapped in Ningaloo Reef off the west coast of Australia, with the image showing the giant fish floating beneath a tourist boat in the blue waters of Turquoise Bay.

The huge eight-metre-long (26ft) creature – the world’s largest species of fish – appeared to dwarf the small vessel as it loomed beneath the surface of the waves.

Wildlife photographer Alex Kydd spotted the shark at the reef while visiting the picturesque area last week.

It brings to mind the terrifying film in which a monster shark with a taste for human flesh terrorises the people of Amity Island.

Thankfully the shark in Alex's photo simply lurked beneath the waves rather than attacking the boat as it passed.

The idyllic scenery of Australia contrasts with what lies beneath the surface, which can be exhilarating for photographers and animal enthusiasts but terrifying for those with a fear of sharks.

Whale sharks, however, only eat plankton despite their terrifying size as they can grow to 12 metres (39ft) long and weigh 13 tonnes.

In October The Mirror reported a friendly whale shark in the same area had risen above the surface to greet a Labrador

The animal was so determined to say hello to the huge 22ft-long creature from a small boat that he made sure he got as close as possible.

Jade Pursell, 28, was diving with a friend off Ningaloo Reef, Australia, when they came across the inquisitive shark, who swam right up to their boat.

Footage showed the shark poke its head out of the water, within feet of her investigative pet who went in for a closer look.

Clearly intrigued by the huge beast in the water below, eight-year-old Sailor moved around the motor and leaned overboard to brush noses with the shark.
