People in Mansfield have shared their concerns over speeding in the area following the police conducting speed checks. After a number of concerns were raised by residents, Mansfield South Safer Neighbourhood Team conducted a Fatal 4 Operation relating to speeding vehicles.
The speed checks took place, last month on August 1, on Lindhurst Lane, Jubilee Way South and Bellamy Road, Mansfield. During the operation the speed of more than 160 vehicles were checked.
Pedestrians on Jubilee Way South told Nottinghamshire Live that the speeding can be ‘frightening’ and are relieved police have done checks. Diane Birks, a 42-year-old from Mansfield, says that pedestrians are especially wary of cars going too fast.

Diane said: “It’s definitely an issue in the area. You always get the occasional idiots going way too quickly. It can be frightening at times especially when there’s a lot of people walking about. It’s tough because it’s not something you can always monitor, but I'm glad the police have done something.”
During the speed check, the majority of motorists were found to be within the speed limit. However, three drivers were reported for excess speed, and three were advised regarding the speed at which they were travelling.
Another local, Cathy Fletcher, 58, says it can be frightening for her when she crosses the street on her scooter. The 58-year-old said: “People generally speed quickly down here. It’s scary if you’ve got to cross the road with a mobile scooter. It is a busy road.”
Neil Hawley, 53, who works in construction, told Nottinghamshire Live that some motorists can be seen driving quickly down Jubilee Way South, but says most stick to the speed limit.
Mr Hawley said: “People do speed. But it’s the same as any other road, Lindhurst Lane is one that can be bad. People can come down here pretty fast but I do find most are sensible. I wasn’t aware the police had been doing checks. “
Mansfield District Police said: “On Monday 1st August 2022, officers from the Mansfield South Safer Neighbourhood Team conducted a Fatal 4 Operation relating to speeding vehicles. Following a number of concerns raised by local residents, officers conducted speed checks on Lindhurst Lane, Jubilee Way South and Bellamy Road.
“During the initiative the speed of more than 160 vehicles were checked. Fortunately, the vast majority were found to be within the speed limit. However, 3 drivers were reported for excess speed, and 3 were advised regarding the speed at which they were travelling.
“Whilst conducting the Operation, officers spoke with a number of residents who were walking past, and most people stated they appreciated the officers being there, and that the speed checks were necessary.
“Officers will continue to conduct the Fatal 4 Operation around the Mansfield South area on a regular basis, which tackles motorists who are speeding, using mobile phones whilst driving, not wearing seat belts, or driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs.”
