A 13-year-old boy was pulled from the River Taff in Cardiff but tragically died after he could not be resuscitated.
A major search and rescue operation took place for the boy who was reported missing at 4.45pm on Tuesday.
Police were told that children had been seen playing in the River Taff, near Forest Farm, in Whitchurch, Cardiff.
Emergency services, including a National Police Air Service helicopter from St Athan began a search of the area which eventually led to the discovery of the 13-year-old boy but he could not be saved.
South Wales Police said it "can confirm a 13-year-old boy has died. This follows a search of the River Taff at Whitchurch, Cardiff, earlier this evening."
Detective Inspector Abi Biddle stated: “At 4.45pm today (Tuesday, June 21), a report was received of children in the River Taff near Forest Farm Road, Whitchurch, Cardiff and one boy was missing.
"An extensive search was carried out by police, fire, ambulance, coastguard and the police helicopter.
"The missing 13-year-old boy was located in the river at around 5.45pm and, despite the efforts of the emergency services, he was unable to be resuscitated.
"The boy’s family has been informed and are being supported at this time. HM Coroner has been informed and an investigation into the circumstances of the incident is ongoing.”
A local wrote on social media that they had seen as many as 25 emergency service vehicles parked by the water wheel in Whitchurch shortly after 5pm.
Many people have now posted their condolences to the family after the tragedy.
One person wrote: "The news the community prayed we wouldn’t hear. Heartfelt condolences to the poor boy’s family & friends. My heart breaks for all those affected by this tragedy including the emergency services involved in the search."
Another tweeted: Oh no, that's so sad. Thinking of his poor family right now. I have a 13 year old boy and I just can't imagine what they're going through. Fly high young man."
Similarly another said: "Our thoughts are with family and friends and community."
