United States senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden have asked the US Justice Department (DOJ) to open an anti-trust investigation into the planned deal between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, saying they believe it would result in a monopoly over professional golf operations.

The surprise leave occurs as Congress takes an increased interest in the merger. Monahan says the PGA was "largely left on our own" by Congress to fight off its Saudi rival.

The recent merger of the PGA Tour and Saudi-backed LIV Golf ended a long battle between the two, typically framed as a struggle between pure, upright American values and brute economic, political and even murderous force. Many associated LIV backers with 9/11 and the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

A joint statement from Monahan and the PGA Tour’s policy board was released on Tuesday evening.
