The Bombay High Court has reserved its judgment in petitions challenging the IT Amendment Rules, 2023, which empowers the central government to establish fact-check units to identify “fake news” about itself on social media and order its take down, Livelaw reported.

The Editors’ Guild of India has written to the leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi over “concerns” about “legislative measures taken to control media” over the past years, urging the opposition to raise questions in the parliament.

The Supreme Court again extended its interim protection to four members of the Editors Guild of India in the FIRs lodged over their fact-finding report, and said the “entire complaint is the government’s counter-narrative”, Livelaw reported. 

The report was published by the EGI on September 2 after it sent a team to look into a complaint from the Indian Army about misinformation being spread in the State.
