Someone from the last-place Hawks had to be chosen, and Jones was the lucky — or unlucky — man. He’s now headed to Florida on Feb. 3-4, but he remains dissatisfied with his actual performance this season.

CHICAGO — Opening their three-game road trip Tuesday night against the league’s worst team, the Lightning had plenty of opportunities to pull away from the Blackhawks at the United Center, but found themselves going into the final period of regulation still deadlocked at 1.

The zone-based “box-plus-one” defensive system that coach Luke Richardson has installed still seems like the best option. The Hawks are just making too many mistakes while trying to follow that structure.

The brothers produced two of their better games of the season Thursday and Friday, albeit in Hawks losses. With Richardson asking them to be more careful when they jump up offensively, they’ve made fewer costly errors lately.

The Hawks’ 3-1 loss Friday represented their 17th in their last 20 games overall and their 14th in their last 17 meetings against Winnipeg.

Jones puts a lot of pressure on himself and feels he hasn’t lived up to those expectations. But especially now, with Jones’ thumb locked in a splint, coach Luke Richardson wants him to simplify his game rather than try to do too much.

Jones on Wednesday took accountability for a series of “mishaps” over his past three games. Richardson, meanwhile, has worked closely with Jones to boost his spirits.
