London (AFP) - Boris Johnson resigned on Thursday as leader of Britain's Conservative party, paving the way for the selection of a new prime minister after dozens of ministers quit his scandal-hit government.

His resignation will trigger an internal election to pick a new leader of the Conservative Party, who will also be the next prime minister. He steps down after defections left him unable to govern.

It was, as ever, the child of an immigrant who did the entirely necessary job that no one else wanted to do. Sajid Javid’s resignation as health secretary on Tuesday evening precipitated a torrent of departures that ultimately led to the end of Boris Johnson’s premiership.
