Lod (Israel) (AFP) - A repatriation flight from Romania carrying Israelis evacuated from Ukraine landed at Ben Gurion airport outside Tel Aviv on Tuesday to the teary relief of waiting relatives.

The European Union is preparing to grant Ukrainians who flee the war the right to stay and work in the 27-nation bloc for up to three years, senior European officials said on Monday, adding that EU border states would get help to cope with the arrivals.

Just under 71,000 Ukrainians have fled to Romania since Russia invaded Ukraine, and more than half of them have already exited the country through its Bulgarian and Hungarian borders, government spokesman Dan Carbunaru said on Monday.

“My father called me as soon as I crossed the border,” said Muhammad Afridi Shoaib. “I told him I had made it to Romania. He started to cry, and so did I.”
