The head of the left-leaning US news channel MSNBC has quit, a source at the network told AFP Tuesday, just days before Donald Trump returns to the White House threatening to silence critical coverage.

Rashida Jones, the first Black president of a major television news network, has stepped down as MSNBC's leader amid corporate restructuring and industry challenges.

“After four incredible years at the helm of MSNBC and 11 years at NBCU, I have made the decision to pursue new opportunities,” Jones shared in a memo to staff.
