French authorities on Thursday razed an informal settlement on the Indian Ocean island of Mayotte after overnight unrest sparked by government plans to clear slums and send illegal migrants back to the neighbouring Comoros.

On a visit to the French Indian Ocean island of Mayotte on Tuesday, Interior and Overseas Minister Gerald Darmanin said he would work on proposals for juvenile offenders to be sent to correctional venues run by the military.

The French government will reinforce its police presence on the overseas territory of Mayotte after recent gang violence on the island, said the Interior Ministry.
