The aerial attacks came just hours after US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin, who promised Russia would respond "very strongly" to Ukraine's audacious drone attacks on military airfields on Sunday.

At least five people, including a one-year-old boy, his mother and grandmother, were killed in a Russian drone strike on Pryluky in northern Ukraine early Thursday.

At least 11 people were injured in Russian strikes on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv and the nearby region overnight. Kyiv says it repelled a total of 173 assaults across the front line.

Russia is amassing thousands of troops at the border with Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region, the Ukrainian president said, amid reports from the Ukrainian military that Moscow may be preparing new attacks on Kharkiv.
