Rich Strike, the longshot winner of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, will skip next week's Preakness Stakes in Baltimore. The shocking announcement came Thursday afternoon in a news release from owner Rick Dawson.

Rick Dawson, Rich Strike’s owner, released a statement Thursday saying they will instead look towards the June 11 Belmont Stakes in order to get more rest and recovery time.

The 80-1 Derby winner will not go for the Triple Crown, as trainer Eric Reed and owner Rick Dawson stood up to the entire racing industry and put their horse first.

A practice run Saturday will determine whether Rich Strike will race in the second leg of the Triple Crown. Said trainer Eric Reed: “I can’t do anything but what’s best for the horse.”
