Sun-Times reporter Sophie Sherry and transportation expert Joseph Schwieterman appeared on WBEZ’s Reset to talk about the recent CTA Yellow Line crash and what it means for train safety.

The CTA has said very little about last week’s Yellow Line crash. Even so, the incident is set to become another example of the transit agency’s woes, highlighting its shortcomings and failure to implement the latest technology.

He lives in Milwaukee but has become a symbol of Chicago thanks to being heard on the L since 2000 and on CTA buses since 2003. The inspiration for his “train voice” was a Walt Disney World monorail announcer.

The presentations to a regional transit board happened in the same day that a rail crash on the CTA’s Yellow Line injured dozens.

“It’s really early in the investigation,” NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy told reporters Friday. The Yellow Line will remain suspended for five days. Meanwhile, at least two lawsuits related to the accident have been filed.

It takes three months to ready the festive rail cars, which will start picking up passengers Nov. 24.
