Mungantiwar condemned the statue’s removal particularly as it had come when Maharashtra and the country were celebrating the 350th anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji’s coronation (in 1674).

The bandh call given seeking reinstallation of the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj which was removed by the district administration from a traffic circle in Bagalkot, received a good response with most of the business and commercial establishments remaining closed on Saturday.

Former MLC Narayansa Bhandage accused officials of enforcing rules selectively. “Officers are not stopping the use of loudspeakers for azaan (call for prayers) by mosques despite a Supreme Court order. But they are quick to remove statues of Hindu icons,” he said.
