The United States on Friday urged accountability over the murder in the Brazilian Amazon of a British journalist and an Indigenous expert, as it hailed defenders of the rainforest.

Atalaia do Norte (Brazil) (AFP) - Brazilian police said Friday the killers of British journalist Dom Phillips and his expert guide Bruno Pereira had acted on their own initiative and not as part of a criminal group -- an assertion rejected by Indigenous leaders. 

A forensic exam carried out on human remains found in the Amazon rainforest confirmed on Friday that they belonged to British journalist Dom Phillips, Brazil's federal police said, adding that a search was underway for a man suspected of involvement in his killing.
