Zach Wilson wants to make the life of a future Jets vet QB ‘hell’ in a weird threat to a potential coworker

To say Zach Wilson had a tough 2022 season would be an understatement. The Jets seemed to be on the precipice of playoff contention for a while as a legitimate power in the AFC. But, thanks to instability and consistent inconsistency from quarterbacks like Wilson — who was benched not once but twice toward the end of the year — New York ultimately fell short of playing meaningful games in January.

With Wilson’s future in doubt and the Jets likened to pursue any number of veteran quarterbacks that could elevate their talented roster (with receivers like Garrett Wilson) to playoff contention, the offseason ahead will certainly be a fascinating one in New York.

As the Jets wrapped up the regular year on Monday in the team’s facility, Wilson was asked what he thought of a potential veteran QB addition challenging for “his” job. His response was nothing short of weird and, quite frankly, a little unsettling when you consider he was talking about a possible future coworker:

You know, I’m not sure if there’s a current NFL player with less self-awareness.

By many statistical measures — including the 32nd best composite CPOE and EPA — Zach Wilson was arguably the worst starting quarterback in professional football in 2022. Just like he was arguably the worst starting quarterback in professional football in 2021. Here he is, all smiles, talking about the future and competition with a veteran QB that will likely be signed specifically to do what he couldn’t do and to replace him. Never mind the distinct possibility that Wilson might not even be on the Jets roster come 2023.

If Wilson thinks there will be a legitimate competition between himself and Established Veteran QB, well, I have a lovely timeshare opportunity to talk to him about.

NFL fans didn't take Wilson's answer about a competition remotely seriously
