A woman in Darwin has died after being stabbed by a man outside a hotel in the city centre on Friday night.

Police attended the scene around 6pm after a woman entered the foyer of the DoubleTree hotel suffering from stab wounds and bleeding heavily. It is alleged that a man stabbed the victim after an argument on the Esplanade.

The victim was taken to Royal Darwin hospital with life-threatening injuries and died shortly after.

A man has been taken into custody by police following the alleged stabbing.

The minister for Indigenous Australians, Linda Burney, was metres away from the incident in Darwin’s CBD, with her team providing first aid to the victim.

In a statement released by Burney’s office on Saturday evening, the minister expressed her “heartfelt condolences” to the victim’s family. Burney had been staying at the hotel before the incident took place.

“Together with staff from the hotel, members of my staff provided assistance to the woman, and I comforted members of her family.

“As this matter is being investigated by the Northern Territory police it would be inappropriate for me to provide any further comment at this time,” the statement said.

The NT chief minister, Natasha Fyles, said: “My heart goes out to all those affected last night. A woman has lost her life.”

Burney was in Darwin to announce new dialysis units for remote Indigenous communities, as well as discuss the voice to parliament.
