What is the new TikTok mascara trend? New ‘algospeak’ lands Julia Fox in hot water

The latest TikTok trend bearing the word mascara has had many scratching their head.

There are millions of views under the hashtag mascara, but if you think that users are captivated by tutorials and reviews, you would be wrong.

On TikTok, mascara is in fact not at all about the make-up item, but a new code word.

And it appears that not everyone has got the memo, resulting in an unfortunate comment from actress Julia Fox.

What is TikTok Mascara?

Put simply, the term mascara refers to one’s romantic partner, or alternatively, to a man’s penis. TikTok users have been using the new algospeak to air their dirty laundry.

Often the videos include a PSA in brackets and a hashtag stating, “this isn’t about mascara”.

The trend has also been a safe haven for women, allowing them to open up and share their romantic and sexual experiences, including the good, the bad, and the disappointing.

Some can be disheartening, such as one post, which read: “The one mascara I ever really liked ended up damaging my eyelashes really badly so now I’m too scared to try any new mascaras because I can’t take my eyelashes being damaged again.”

Most are entertaining, with another saying, “My fav mascara couldn’t keep its wand in its tube.”

A few are very sweet, such as one who said: “I’ve had my mascara since I was 14. I’m now 24. Only mascara I’ve ever tried but I know there’s nothing like this one anywhere else. I even made a smaller version because I like it so much.”

Julia Fox and TikTok mascara trend

However, it appears that model and actress Julia Fox didn’t get the memo before commenting on one user’s mascara post.

Writing on TikTok, @big_whip13 said: “I gave this one girl mascara one time and it must’ve been so good that she decided that her and her best friend should both try it without my consent.”

Fox commented: “I don’t feel bad for you”. The user replied: “You don’t feel bad that I was sexually assaulted?”

Since posting her remark, Fox has been embroiled in controversy, reportedly deleting comments that asked her to address her statement, particularly after the user included “#saawareness #foryoupage #menspeakup” in his post.

It is unclear whether Fox knew about the new mascara trend and instead believed that he was literally talking about mascara.

While mascara is the latest word to be given a double meaning, code wording on TikTok isn’t new.

“Algospeak” is when social media users use code words speak to talk about sensitive and adult topics without being censored. For example, the corn emoji refers to porn, while “spicy eggplant” is code for a vibrator.
