Viral trends come and go and one that is quickly becoming more popular is the new app BeReal. From Instagram to Twitter, many apps have gripped millions of users worldwide and BeReal could be the next big thing.
The concept behind BeReal is exactly as the name would suggest, the aim is to be your true, authentic, real self. There are no options to add filters and you can not edit the pictures in any way. It is completely you.
All users of the app receive a notification at a different time every day. You then have to take a photo of exactly what you are doing when the notification goes off or once you see the notification on your phone. You can get more news like this and other story updates straight to your inbox by subscribing to our newsletters here.

On the app, a front-facing and back-facing photo is taken at the same time and you can then post it. As the notification goes off at a different time every day, the idea is to capture the realities of everyday life and move away from the fake Instagram lifestyle. Some days you may be 'living your best life' on holiday, at the beach or in an amazing restaurant. On other days you may just be scrolling in bed or working at your day job.
There is the option to re-take the photo as many times as you like, however other users can see how many attempts you took, but with no editing available, BeReal is true to what you are doing at that moment. You can make your profile private, so only people you want to add on the app can see your BeReals, or public so any app user can see it.
Your BeReal disappears once the notification goes off for the next day and only you can see the BeReals you previously posted. Users can also not see other users' BeReals until they post their own. You can caption the posts, with a limited number of characters.
The idea of the app is to promote a different type of social media and, as someone who has friends in different cities across the UK, it is nice to see what they are up to. Things they think aren't worth telling, like they only wrote 200 words on their diss that day, actually is interesting and makes me feel closer to them. You feel like you are keeping up with their real lives.
BeReal is free and can be downloaded from the Apple app store for iPhones and the Play Store on Androids.
