Weston-super-Mare woman repeatedly punched man in street in unprovoked attack

A woman who attacked a man in Weston-super-Mare has been spared immediate jail. Bristol Crown Court heard Jade Griffiths, who suffers from mental health difficulties, punched the male several times in the face near Sass cafe and bar and he didn't hit back.

Griffiths, 35, of Millstone Close in Weston-super-Mare, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm in July 2021. She also admitted causing criminal damage in March last year and possessing crack cocaine in July last year, all in breach of a suspended jail term for assaulting emergency workers.

Judge Moira MacMillan handed her a 48-week prison term suspended for two years. She told Griffiths: "You have suffered trauma in the past and mental health challenges."

The judge handed Griffiths a 12-month drug rehabilitation requirement. She was also told to have up to 35 days' rehabilitation activity requirement.

The court heard Griffiths carried out an unprovoked attack on the man. Though she punched him in the face several times, causing him serious facial injuries, he chose not to resist her.

Griffiths admitted damaging a wing mirror on a taxi. The judge said this was after Griffiths had consumed alcohol and her behaviour "got out of control".

The judge said Griffiths was similarly out of control when she was aggressive to people around her as a well as police. On this occasion she was found to have crack cocaine.

Nadeem Aullybocus, defending, said his client was reaching out for support for issues and taking steps to make herself better. He told the court: "Treat the addiction that feeds the mental health. Treat the mental health that triggers the offending."
