We tried the Hilton Hotel's new £23 afternoon tea and the quality surprised us

The Hilton Hotel in Liverpool's booming city centre has launched a 'premium' afternoon tea and we were invited along to try it to see how it measures up.

Hilton Hotels are a global brand, with a stellar reputation. Its spacious Liverpool site, just a stone's throw from the ever popular Liverpool ONE, is known for its luxurious touches, vast events space, decadent drinking and dining options, and its impressive views.

Afternoon tea remains a phenomenally popular experience, with venues who offer it often booking up in record time. The new afternoon tea at Hilton Hotel has tough competition in a city with such an eclectic mix of options.

My colleagues Amy Browne, Emily Sleight, Charlotte Roszko and I headed down to the launch event, where we were led through to the beautiful Exchange Restaurant on the ground floor. The tables were covered in timeless white tablecloths, while an abundance of greenery brought the outdoors inside.

It's a peaceful setting, with the expansive floor to ceiling windows ideal for those who fancy a spot of people watching. Upon arrival, attentive staff greeted us with a glass of Prosecco before bringing out the Hilton premium afternoon tea.

Three tiers contained all the usual afternoon tea staples you'd expect; finger sandwiches, mini rolls, and warm bites as well as a selection of high quality cakes and scones.

Staff ensured Charlotte and I received a vegetarian version of the indulgent treat, while Amy and Emily tucked into the meat version. Whatever your dietary requirements or preferences, the Hilton’s afternoon tea is a feast for the senses.

Vegetarian afternoon teas can be a little lacking in the sandwich department, so I was impressed with the attention to detail and variation in flavours offered.

There was cheddar and pickle chutney; hummus and red pepper; the quintessentially British classic cucumber sandwich, and an olive and salad sandwich - which both Charlotte and I avoided because we loathe olives. There were also vegetarian rolls, and though I couldn’t ascertain what was inside, it was delicious.

Meat eaters were treated to honey-roast ham with mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato finger sandwiches, and cheddar and pickle chutney finger sandwiches, alongside hot smoked salmon with creamy chive filling mini rolls, a piri-piri sausage roll, and a pastrami with horseradish and lettuce mini roll.

The cakes were lighter than air, though rich and dense with flavour. The scones were light and fluffy, with jam and cream to apply - sorry, but jam goes on first - and currants. Staff were keen to check in whether we needed our glasses refilling without being overbearing, and the venue was a surprisingly calm space considering its central location.

I would definitely recommend the Hilton’s premium afternoon tea, especially if you fancy a relaxed afternoon with friends or family, chatting away and watching the world go by while indulging in a variety of sweet and savoury treats. We were surprised by just how delicious and high quality it actually was, with excellent food and exemplary service.

The premium afternoon tea is available from 1pm until 3pm Monday to Sunday for £22.95 per person. Once a month, guests will be able to enjoy live music while tucking into their afternoon tea.

Details of live music afternoon tea events will be posted on the Hilton Hotel Liverpool city centre social media channels. The Hilton Hotel can be found at 3 Thomas Steers Way, Liverpool, L1 8LW.
