We tried Gordon Ramsay's street burger in Edinburgh and had some thoughts

Who doesn't love a good burger? Thankfully, Edinburgh is home to some incredible options, and in November celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay brought his very own luxury restaurant, Street Burger, to the city.

Promising "honest-priced burgers with bags of flavour", the first Street Burger restaurant north of the border generated a lot of buzz when it first launched on level 4 of St James Quarter at the tail end of last year.

Unlike the more upmarket eateries he is known for, the new chain offers what the TV chef says are more reasonable prices for the dishes created by his crack team of chefs.

In fact, a burger and chips here will set you back just £16, which, when compared with similar chains such as Nandos and Five Guys, isn't entirely unreasonable.

So, keen to see what all the fuss is about, Edinburgh Live headed along to check it out.

First off, can we just say that the staff in GR Street Burger are absolutely lovely, welcoming us in, they guided us through the red-curtained entrance, past the open plan kitchen where the expert chefs were hard at work making the freshly prepared burgers and into our seats.

Inside the decor is chic and hip, reflecting the "effortlessly cool" Street Burger ethos - with Pac-Man arcade machines, sleek lighting and modern artworks.

Explaining the GRSB concept, the server talked us through the menu, which featured the original Burger and Chips combo for £16 with plenty of upgrades, sides and sharers on offer.

In the interest of fairness, we decided to keep it simple, ignoring the draw of extras like the JFC Dirty Fries (£7) and Chocolate BBQ chicken wings (5 for £8.50), or the upgrades such as the Wagyu patty (£5.50), settling for the O.G.R Burger.

Made with Grass-fed Hereford beef, smoked cheese, house relish and salad, it sounded delicious and was the closest to the classic cheeseburger we could find on the brown paper menu – next time though, we'll definitely be trying the excellent sounding Full Scottish (Lorne sausage, over easy egg, hash brown and tomato relish).

The small but perfectly formed O.G.R Burger (Edinburgh Live)

Our burger took longer than we were expecting, (possibly a good sign it was made fresh), with it finally arriving on a metal tray, accompanied by the paper poke of crunchy seasoned fries – which were mouth-wateringly good but in a disappointingly wee portion.

Speaking of wee, the burger was perfectly formed but oh, so small.

Seriously, we normally rail against the obnoxiousness of tower burgers or those over-packed monstrosities you'll often find elsewhere that drip grease and sauce with one bite sending bits of veg flying everywhere but this burger was seriously toaty.

Everything was stacked neatly though, from the crisp fresh veg and the crunchy flavoursome pickle to the juicy patty and delicious-looking smoked cheese, and our first bite confirmed that this was indeed a tasty burger.

So much so, that we happily tucked in, enjoying each bite immensely. Sadly though, there weren't many and it didn't take long to finish.

Finishing up and grabbing our £25 bill (which covered the two cokes, the burger and fries, and a tip), still feeling a little hungry we pondered a trip next door to rival burger joint El Perro Negro to compare but decided that might just be too much.

Overall, it was as delicious a burger as one would expect from such a top chef and his team but portion-wise, it left a lot to be desired with the burger just a bit bigger than the McDonald's or Burger King cheeseburger we contemplated getting on the way home to sate our left over hunger.
