Much-loved independent cinema The Plaza in Waterloo is set to host a series of tours.
The Plaza has a long history in the city, having opened its doors more than 80 years ago. The independent cinema is offering locals the chance to discover more about its history with new tours.
Sharing the news on Facebook, cinema manager Martin Fol, who has worked at The Plaza for more than 20 years, said: “The Plaza will be introducing a behind the scenes and tour of this iconic building, listen to its history how it evolved since 1939 and watch a documentary about it becoming a Community Cinema.

“If you're a group, society, organisation or individuals then why not drop me an email to enquire about visiting email martin.fol@plazacinema.org.uk. The tours will be mornings and afternoon times on weekdays. Tours will cost £10 each with all monies going towards the Mighty Wurlitzer Fund.”
The tours will give people a glimpse into the Plaza’s long Liverpool history, journeying through the cinema and even being given the chance to watch a documentary about the cinema’s story.
The Plaza was originally opened in 1939, operating as such until 1995, when the owners notified the public that it would be undergoing redevelopment. The local community pulled together to save the cinema and, after a long battle, the cinema was re-opened in July 1997.
The cinema has three screens, the largest of which seats more than 500 and features the original chairs from 1939. The art deco cinema offers screening of some of the biggest movies available, and even offers special screenings that are Autism, Alzheimer’s and Dementia friendly.
Dates for the Plaza’s tours have yet to be released, but for anyone interested in arranging a tour email martin.fol@plazacinema.org.uk. Tours will cost £10 per person, with all proceeds going to the Mighty Wurlitzer fund.
