Edinburgh cyclist narrowly avoids being hit by car on busy city street

An Edinburgh cyclist has shared the moment he escaped a dangerous collision after a careless driver pulled in front of him on a busy Newington street.

The incident was captured on camera and shared on social media, as the cyclist sarcastically branded the driver at fault "Edinburgh's most aware driver".

In the video posted on Twitter, the cyclist, publishing under the name Edinburgh's Finest, can be seen making his way through South Clerk Street on Tuesday, January 17.

The road user was then forced to make a rapid stop as a black car pulls out right in front of them, creating a potentially hazardous situation.

The cyclist said: "You can see that the car is initially parked in the bus lane, and the driver decides to pull out because a traffic warden shows up - you can see him in his high Vis jacket standing right next to the car that pulls out."

Showing no consideration for the incident, the motorist can be seen driving away at the end of the clip.

Careless driving is a serious offence, and a near-miss could be enough for one to be charged and penalised for it - with a potential fine of up to £5,000. It can also result in a motorist being banned from driving altogether.

You can report dangerous driving via Police Scotland's online reporting system here.
