Waitrose shoppers can get free tea or coffee with every shop - but you need your own cup

Waitrose is making a huge change to their loyalty card members next month - and we think it’s going to be a pretty popular one. The supermarket is reportedly set to bring back its free coffees for members of the MyWaitrose scheme next month - but there is a catch.

The free hot drinks for MyWaitrose members was paused in June 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic, but the chain has now revealed the beverage deal is making a comeback next month.

As part of the offer, shoppers will be able to claim a free Americano, cappuccino, latte, or tea once a day. However it will only be available when they make an in-store purchase.

Waitrose brought in the free coffee offer in 2013. It was initially available to members with or without a purchase, however it was updated in 2017 so shoppers had to buy something to claim the drink. The Daily Mail says the offer will return on November 7, just in time for the dark nights.

The supermarket also used to offer a free newspaper with a £10 spend to MyWaitrose customers. However this was axed in February, replaced with 'more personalised offers'.

There will be no minimum spend needed to claim the deal, and non-myWaitrose members will also be able to purchase drinks - with tea from £2.25 and coffees from £2.35. But - you will need to take your own reusable cup.

In April 2018, Waitrose committed to removing disposable takeaway cups from all of their stores in a bid to protect the environment. They say the move has saved an estimated 52 million takeaway cups a year from going into landfill.

Waitrose has teamed up with Caffè Nero, with the Nero Roasting Company to supply the coffee beans for their self-serve machines. A trial had been in place earlier this year, but now looks set to be rolled out across all 331 stores.

The new link-up between Caffè Nero and Waitrose is among the biggest between a supermarket and coffee shop brand. Both myWaitrose members and Caffè Nero App users will be able to receive benefits in branches of each chain.

Charlotte Di Cello, commercial director for Waitrose, told the Daily Mail: "Our customers loved the myWaitrose free coffee offer, so we're really excited to bring it back, with premium beans from The Nero Roasting Company. The partnership is an ideal fit, helping customers enjoy quality coffee both in store or at home - with even more benefits in the pipeline."

The supermarket have promised further announcements on benefits for customers, which will be applied at Waitrose branches and more than 650 Caffè Nero stores across the UK.
