Waitrose announces return of free hot drink offer for loyalty card members

Waitrose has announced the return of its free hot drink offer for any of its customers that hold one of their loyalty cards - just two years after scrapping it.

The deal was scrapped by the premium UK supermarket chain at the start of the pandemic in 2020 and comes as it has reported a decrease in sales amidst the cost of living crisis.

A trial scheme took place earlier this year, but will now be reinstated at all 331 branches nationwide starting from next month.

From Monday, November 7, MyWaitrose members will be able to grab a free Americano, Latte, Cappuccino or tea when they make a purchase on their trip to stores.

It comes after Waitrose recently scrapped their beloved 'free newspaper when you spend £10' offer for loyalty members, in favour of more 'personalised' offers and deals.

The supermarket has teamed up with Caffe Nero for the new offer (PA)

The return of the offer will see customers able to pick up upgraded coffee, as Waitrose has teamed up with Nero Roasting Company to supply premium coffee beans.

It forms part of a wider partnership with high-street coffee chain Caffé Nero, which will see customers able to pick up its products in Waitrose stores.

There will be no minimum spend needed to claim the deal, and non-myWaitrose members will also be able to purchase drinks – with tea from £2.25 and coffees from £2.35.

Both myWaitrose members and Caffè Nero App users will be able to receive benefits in branches of each chain.

Waitrose commercial director Charlotte Di Cello said: “Our customers loved the myWaitrose free coffee offer, so we’re really excited to bring it back, with premium beans from The Nero Roasting Company.”

It comes after the supermarket chain has reportedly seen a steady decrease in sales this year as shoppers continue to change up their habits during the cost of living crisis.

According to the Retail Gazette, the grocer posted a five percent drop in like-for-like sales to £3.6 billion in September, with Aldi and Lidl surging in popularity as shoppers look to save cash.

The Waitrose free hot drink offer returns to stores nationwide from Monday, November 7.
