Visitors caring for 'dumped pets' living in park

A pair of pet ducks have been spotted walking tall among the wild flock in St Helens' popular Taylor Park.

The ducks, which have reportedly been living in the park since May, are believed to be Indian Runners, a flightless, domestic breed with an upright walk and a distinctive bowling pin-shaped body.

It is believed the pair may have been dumped there or escaped from somewhere nearby, as their unique breeding means they would have been unable to fly in from far away.

Despite their inability to fly, the RSPCA said it has no concerns about the ducks' welfare.

A spokesman said: “We’re really grateful to the members of the public who are caring for these Indian Runner ducks which appear to be in good health and clearly seem to be happily living with other wild birds.

“We do not know how they ended up in this area but it is likely they are escaped pets or have been given up by their owner.

“We have no welfare concerns for them but if anyone did they can contact our advice line on 0300 1234 999.”
