Video: Justin Haley suffers unusual hood failure in Martinsville Cup practice

In the middle of Group B practice at Martinsville Speedway, Justin Haley took his No. 7 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet out onto the track for his 20th lap.

Unfortunately for Haley, the hood pins were not secured. While throttling up on the frontstretch, the hood shot up and wrapped around the windshield, momentarily blinding him as he locked up the brakes into Turn 1.

"It broke the hood," Haley radioed as he avoided any damage to the rest of the car before quickly returning to the pits for repairs. Haley did get back out on track, but only briefly. He ended the session with 22 laps run, 34th out of 38 on the time sheets.

Other than the brief caution for Haley's issue, the rest of the issue went without further interruption.

Bubba Wallace led the way with the single fastest lap at 20.115s. Christopher Bell led the way among the Group A drivers and was second overall. Denny Hamlin was third, Carson Hocevar fourth, and Cole Custer fifth in the combined standings.

Wallace also led the way in the best five and ten lap averages while Ty Gibbs led the way in 15, 20 and 25-lap averages. At 30 laps, the most recent winner at Martinsville -- Ryan Blaney -- topped the charts. William Byron, who won this race one year ago, clocked in seventh on the time sheets.
