Venezuelan authorities have requested an arrest warrant for opposition's former presidential candidate Edmundo González, following the disputed election where President Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner by election officials. The prosecutor seeking the warrant has cited charges against González, including conspiracy, falsifying documents, and usurpation of powers, with a focus on terrorism-related crimes.
The ruling party-loyal electoral authorities announced Maduro's victory in the July 28 presidential elections shortly after the polls closed. However, they did not provide detailed results to support their claim, leading to criticism for lack of transparency from the international community.
Despite the official declaration, the opposition claims to have obtained over 80% of vote tally sheets, which are generated by each electronic voting machine. According to the opposition, these sheets indicate that Maduro actually lost by a significant margin against González.
