Donald Trump is within touching distance of winning the 2024 US presidential election and becoming the 47th president of the United States.
Previously serving as the 45th president for one term between 2017 and 2021 and famously becoming one of three presidents in history to be impeached, Mr Trump is expected to win the 2024 election over his opponent, Kamala Harris.
What happens after election day?
After the final results are in, states have until December 11 to resolve any discrepancies in their votes. Six days later, on December 17, electors meet in their state capitals to formally cast their votes for president and vice president.
Although the winner of the election is already widely known by this point, at the beginning of January, Congress convenes in Washington to count all of the electoral votes and officially announce the winner of the election.
What happens between election day and inauguration day?
During this time, the current administration provides a classified summary regarding national security, military operations and foreign affairs to the upcoming administration. Most presidential-elects receive intelligence briefings on a near-daily basis, which allows them to make decisions as soon as they are inaugurated.
