UK weather: Heavy rain warnings as Met Office forecasts flooding and thunder

A yellow weather warning is in place today as rain continues to hammer down across many parts of the country.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning with flooding of homes and businesses likely and public transport to be affected in parts of eastern Scotland

Spray and flooding on roads is also anticipated.

Elsewhere across the UK, Sunday should bring patches of rain that will likely clear eastwards in the morning, revealing sunny spells for many.

BBC Meteorologist Lousie Lease estimates that an inch of rain may fall before the clouds clear in an easterly direction.

"It will clear quite quickly on Sunday morning, easing away from eastern Scotland and southeast England, allowing some sunshine to come through.

However, "sharp squally showers" will be driven in by a brisk westerly wind, Lear says, with some of the rain being heavy with hail and thunder.

Temperatures will remain between 7C and 12C - roughly where they should be at this time of year.

By Monday, another weather system is set to move in, accompanied by some gale force gusts.

"Some of that wet weather will gradually push its way steadily north and east on Monday, though there's a level of uncertainty as to where the rain will gather," Lear warned.

"Rain is likely through Northern Ireland, parts of wales, southwest England and eventually into northern England...scattered showers following on behind....drier but cooler conditions in the far north of Scotland."

That cooler air could cause some wintry showers on Tuesday, but on the whole, there will be some sunny spells coming through.

The rest of the week will remain unsettled as is common for this time of year.

UK five-day weather forecast

Today:

Cloud and outbreaks of rain becoming confined to the Northern Isles by this afternoon with a mixture of sunshine and scattered, blustery showers following. These most frequent in the west, heavy at times with hail and risk of thunder.

Tonight:

Showers becoming confined to the Northern Isles. Becoming chilly with a rural frost and patchy fog in the north and east. Cloud, wind and rain arriving in the southwest later.

Monday:

Rain, heavy at times, becoming slow moving across southern areas. Windy in the southwest with gales possible. Sunshine and a few showers in the north. Rather cold.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Continuing unsettled with rain or showers and strong winds at times, some drier interludes too. Generally rather cold to start with some overnight frost, turning milder by midweek.
