UK's cheapest supermarket revealed - costs less than Tesco, Asda and Lidl

Aldi has been named the UK's cheapest supermarket for the fourth month in a row, consumer group Which? has revealed.

Shoppers who get their groceries at the German discounter can save £23.79 compared to Waitrose, for the same number of items.

Which? conducted its monthly Cheapest Supermarket price comparison and looked at the cost of a basket of 48 items, including groceries and household essentials.

Aldi came in cheapest at £75.61, with the same shopping cost £18.77 more at Morrisons and £11.76 more at Tesco.

The independent consumer group's research also found Aldi to be £23.79 cheaper than Waitrose, for an equivalent basket of items.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, said: "The upcoming months remain uncertain for so many across the UK, and we want to help make this difficult time a little easier for our valued customers.

"We are committed to providing our customers with the very best quality at prices that don't break the bank, and we're thrilled to be yet again recognised as the UK's cheapest supermarket by Which?."

Last week, Aldi opened a new eco-friendly store in a bid to reduce carbon emissions by up to two-thirds and make recycling easier for customers.

The store - which opened on September 29 in Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire - was built with sustainable materials, such as timber fibre insulation, cement replacement concrete and recycled lighting columns.

The building has solar panels and uses chiller doors to reduce energy consumption, the German discounter giant said.

Its structure was redesigned to help reduce overall energy demand by 57 per cent compared with a normal store.

Features in the store include a "hard to recycle" unit to allow customers to recycle items not collected by local authorities, such as coffee pods, medicine packets, batteries, soft plastics and cosmetic packaging.
