Train strike: Liverpool MPs, councillors and others back walk-outs this week

A host of Liverpool MPs, city councillors and other prominent figures have backed striking rail staff as they prepare to walk out this week.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport workers union (RMT) is holding three days of nationwide strikes this week, with around 40,000 staff set to walk out tomorrow, Thursday and Saturday. The union is fighting against proposed job cuts and against what it says is an 'appalling' situation regarding pay and conditions.

The strikes will have major impacts on rail travel in our region. Last week Merseyrail announced it would not be able to run any trains on the network on the strike days of Tuesday, Thursday osr Saturday. There will also be no replacement buses running on those days. Merseyrail staff are not actually involved in the dispute, but the network says it cannot operate without the Network Rail signalling and maintenance staff that will walk out.

There will also be major disruption for operators who run trains in and out of our region. Services that do run will start and finish much earlier than usual, from 7.30am to 6.30pm, with train operators expecting to run very limited timetables. The operators have told passengers not to travel on the strike days unless absolutely necessary. Customers should try to find alternative transport to and from the city if their journey is essential.

Three train operators into the city - Northern Trains, TransPenine Express and Avanti West Coast - have all said they will be running hugely reduced services on the strike days which will also have a knock-on effect on the days in-between. Northern Trains asked customers not to travel at all on services between June 21 and 26. The train operator is going to run a limited service between Alderley Edge and Lime Street with the last train arriving in the city at 6.21pm.

A number of Liverpool MPs, city councillors and other prominent figures have today come out in support of the RMT strike action, saying it is 'entirely justified.' A large number of people have signed a supportive statement including Liverpool MPs Ian Byrne, Dan Carden, Kim Johnson and Paula Barker as well as Birkenhead MP Mick Whitley.

The statement reads: "We the undersigned wholeheartedly support the RMT union in their fight for a decent pay settlement, and to oppose any and all redundancies on the railways. Whilst Boris Johnson and his friends at ‘No 10’ partied and toasted one another’s wealth, RMT members worked through the pandemic maintaining basic services and rail-safety. They are being repaid with a pay freeze and attacks on employment conditions. 2,500 jobs are also at risk across the regional networks.

"The RMT’s fight for a fair deal is entirely justified. However, neither the government nor the rail companies are listening to reason. The union is saying ‘enough is enough’ and nearly 90% of RMT members participating in the ballot have said ‘Yes’ to strikes.

The statement added: "Instead of entering into meaningful talks with the RMT, the Tories are resorting to smear tactics against the union in the media. They are also attempting to restrict the RMT’s right to strike by imposing ‘minimum service requirements during the action. We see this as an attack on all unions that must be resisted. We are appalled at the treatment of RMT members by Johnson’s Tory government. We stand by the RMT in its current campaign, and we wish it every success in its fight for fair treatment for rail workers."
