Train line blocked between Altrincham and Stockport after 'police incident'

All Northern train services between Stockport and Altrincham have been cancelled this evening due to an ongoing police incident.

Journeys going in both directions have been cancelled as emergency services deal with the incident.

There are unconfirmed reports that a person has been hit by a train.

It is thought the incident occured on the line nearby Southmoor Road in Wythenshawe.

National Rail announced that shortly after 4.30pm on Sunday afternoon, February 6, railway lines between the two stations were closed.

It is expected there will be disruption to services until at least 7.30pm this evening.

Pictures show a halted train and what appear to be forensics on the line.

Travellers have been informed they can use their tickets on Transport for Wales services between Chester and Manchester Piccadilly.

Tickets are also being accepted on Metrolink services between Altrincham and Manchester stations.

Replacement road transport has also been put in place by National Rail.

An update from National Rail read: "The railway lines have been closed between Altrincham and Stockport whilst the emergency services deal with an incident.

"To allow their work to be done safely on the track, no trains can currently run through the area. Your train may be at a stand awaiting the lines to reopen."

The nature of the incident is not yet known but the M.E.N has approached the British Transport Police for further information.
