Traffic at standstill near Trafford Centre after trailer overturns on M60

Traffic was brought to a complete standstill on the motorway bridge near the Trafford Centre on Sunday evening. All drivers were stopped and all three lanes were temporarily closed on the anticlockwise carriageway on the M60 between junctions 8 and 9.

For a short while, all three lanes were closed at around 8.30pm after a vehicle and a trailer had overturned in the middle of the carriageway. Shortly afterwards, at around 9pm, one lane was reopened for long queues to slowly drive past the incident as two others remained closed.

Traffic Highways North West confirmed the incident and that all traffic was brought to a halt causing one mile of congestion into the evening. Drivers saw delays of around 30 minutes as lines of cars continued to grow.

Emergency services, including traffic officers remained at the scene. It is understood a trailer being pulled by a vehicle had flipped over and caused the incident near the Trafford Centre.

Work continued to make the scene safe in the the two other lanes as onlookers said that cars had taken the nearest exit to avoid becoming stuck in the congestion. National Highways tweeted: "Traffic is being held on the M60 anti-clockwise between J9 and J8 near Manchester due to an overturned vehicle and trailer.

"There is approximately 1 mile of congestion on the approach to the incident." Greater Manchester and the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have been approached for more information on the incident.
