Tory MP Jamie Wallis charged over car crash

Tory MP Jamie Wallis has been charged with failing to stop after a car crash in Wales last November.

Mr Wallis has also been charged with failing to report the crash, careless driving and leaving a vehicle in a dangerous position, South Wales Police said.

The 37-year-old, from Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan, became the first MP to come out as trans in March.

He is alleged to have crashed his Mercedes into a telegraph pole in Llanblethian, near Cowbridge on November 28, 2021.

Mr Wallis was elected in Bridgend at the 2019 general election, unseating Labour for the first time in three decades.

In a statement, South Wales Police said the force had been "been investigating a road traffic collision which happened in Llanblethian, Cowbridge, in the early hours of Sunday, November 28, 2021.

"Jamie Wallis, 37, from Cowbridge has been charged with failing to stop following a road traffic collision, failure to report a road traffic collision, driving without due care and attention and leaving a vehicle in a dangerous position."

He is due to appear at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday May 10.

Last month, Mr Wallis announced he has been diagnosed with gender dysphoria.

The Conservative MP said he hopes to begin the process of transitioning "as quickly as possible".

Mr Wallis also thanked colleagues for the support they have shown him since he came out as trans.

He told Sky News: "It's not going to be done overnight, it's going to take many, many years."

He added: "I think now that I am out and people do know, I'm free to start that and actually go on that journey at a pace that I find comfortable."
