Three young girls have been arrested and charged in connection with the death of a 64-year-old man in northwest Washington, D.C. The incident occurred on Oct. 17, 2023, in the 6200 block of Georgia Avenue. Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a report of a man down and found the victim, Reggie Brown, with trauma consistent with an assault. Brown, described as a quiet and polite person, was physically handicapped.
Video evidence presented in court showed the beating, leading to the medical examiner ruling the death as a homicide due to blunt force trauma. A 13-year-old girl was initially arrested and charged with second-degree murder, followed by the arrest of two more girls, aged 13 and 12, in connection with Brown's death.
One of the suspects, the 12-year-old girl, was involved in a separate incident where she was shot inside her apartment, located four blocks away from the crime scene. Fortunately, she is expected to survive.
The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information related to the case. Anyone with information is urged to contact the police or submit anonymous tips through the text tip line.
The suspects reportedly have a history of truancy issues, with one of them not attending any classes in 2024. The district is considering measures to hold parents accountable for their children's school attendance, as chronic absenteeism among high school students has been a prevalent issue in D.C.
Addressing truancy is seen as a potential solution to reducing juvenile crime, which has been on the rise in the district. A recent report highlighted that 60% of D.C. high school students were chronically absent during the 2022-2023 school year, indicating a need for intervention to improve school attendance and address underlying social issues.
