The 'up-and-coming' seaside town less than an hour from Bristol everyone is moving to

Hundreds of people are moving from Bristol to Weston-super-Mare in search of "better value for money", new data suggests.

Building company Persimmons Homes says it has sold around 300 new builds at a residential estate in Weston-super-Mare to people from Bristol.

It comes as recent figures from Zoopla show more people from Bristol are moving to the seaside town than into the city centre.

Carly Spear, sales director at Persimmon Homes, says the pandemic has driven people to move out of cities.

“We’ve seen a huge rise in the number of people wanting to move from Bristol to Weston-super-Mare," she said.

“Currently, around 25 per cent of the homes we’re selling at Haywood Village are to people from Bristol."

Haywood Village is a new development being built on the former Weston Airfield site.

Persimmons has so far sold around 1,200 properties there – and says around 300 of those sales have been to people moving the 25 miles from Bristol.

“I think there are a few factors at play here," Carly continued.

"Perhaps the most significant thing is that the pandemic has forced people to reassess how and where they live. Many people have decided they want to live in less populated areas, and many people no longer need to go into the office every day, which makes living in the city less desirable.

“People also want more space in their homes so they have somewhere to work and buying in Weston-super-Mare offers greater value for money. “

Carly described Weston-super-Mare as ‘up-and-coming’ and said good transport links means it can be quicker to travel from the town into Bristol than from the fringes of Bristol into the city centre.

“Weston is improving all the time,” added Carly. “The seafront has seen huge investment and millions of pounds are also being spent on the town centre.

“There are excellent train links into Bristol which means those people who work in the city a couple of days a week can get there within half an hour. With traffic as it is, that is not too dissimilar to driving from the fringes of Bristol into the centre.

“The property market has been really interesting for the last 18 months or so and I can’t see the popularity of Weston-super-Mare decreasing any time soon.”
