Former Gorseinon Infants School, High Street, Gorseinon

The school had been up for auction for around £370,000, but now a Swansea-based developer is to take on the disused council-owned building. The plot, at the junction of High Street and Brighton Road, used to be an infants school before pupils moved to purpose-built new premises nearby. The sale property has been vacant since then. The property, in an area of just over an acre, could be re-used or developed for uses such as a small number of homes for local people plus a new ground floor commercial space.

This is why the council disposes of buildings and where the money goes

Swansea Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for corporate services and service improvement, David Hopkins, said there were a number of properties owned by the council that were currently up for sale or under offer. He said: “All the properties we put up for sale are sites or buildings we no longer need. Their sale contributes directly to the provision of council services, helping us to keep costs down. For example, part of our £150m school investment programme that has seen four new schools built over the last few years is supported by income from the sale of assets we no longer need. Sale of the land at Aneurin Way will contribute directly to the creation of new sports facilities, including a 3G pitch at Olchfa Comprehensive School.”
