JD Sports is a titan of the UK sports-fashion world, with over 2,400 stores country-wide. But despite its status as a high street staple, many do not know the history of the store, Birmingham Live reports.
Company founders John Wardle and David Makin are actually the inspiration behind the brand, with the name 'JD' being a simple combination of their first names. JD Sports began in 1981, when it began trading from a single shop. The company soon became a franchise when the first JD Sports store opened on Oxford Street in London.
Many Twitter users were shocked by the real meaning behind the name. One person questioned: "Since when does JD in JD Sports stand for John David? Loool."
"JD in JD Sports stands for John and David, idk why that's so funny to me," another wrote.
This comes after many were left perplexed by what fast-fashion brand ASOS actually stands for, and their surprising origins.
"Never knew ASOS stands for ‘As Seen On Screen’. Why am I so behind on things?" one person wrote. "I just learned ASOS means ‘As Seen on Screen’ and originally sold clothes seen on TV shows," another added.

As a third commented: "Do the kids know that ASOS is actually an acronym for As Seen on Screen? And it used to be entirely focused on stocking versions of clothes you’d seen in films or on popular shows."
